Tenor saxophonist Andrew Fawcett guests with the Combo, briging his Blue Note and Brazilian / Afro-Cuban expertise to the lively performances of bop, mainstream, modern and funk tunes. The Combo features Paul Hampson's distinctive blend of guitar solos with scat vocals with Bryan Leigh's swinging mini-bass Drummer Greg Evans provides essential support.

9:00pm Dave Jones 'Impetus' TrioA Cardiff Jazz Society presentation


Dave Jones' piano style recalls Ramsey Lewis for easy sparkle and lilt, and Herbie Hancock for chordal invention. His skills as a composer are also highlighted here, as his trio performs tunes from their acclaimed CD 'Impetus'. The group also features the excellent combination of brothers Chris O'Connor (double bass) and Mark O'Connor (drums).

We are pleased to welcome the Welsh / German Jazz singer Brigida Melly and her band for her first appearance at CafeJAZZ. Brigida and her band are currantly finalizing their studies at the RWCMD and have several different styles to showcase including traditional hote jazz, Munster / Germany Jazz Grooves, raw blues and free improvisation. We can also expect several special guests.

Following last years successful jazz course, Cardiff Jazz Society is again providing an educational project that will enable young people of school / college age, to improve their musical ability with experienced professional musicians in public performance. Leaidng tutors from the South Wales region will guide the students through two days of practise before appearing in public at CafeJAZZ. The CJS wishes to thank the RWCMD for providong facilities for practise sessions.

One of the hottest new bands in South Wales offer their own funky brand of modern soul with a dark edge. Expect a range of classics from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Amy Winehouse to the White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age. This is a Midweek session hosted by DJ Andy Roberts of Radio Cardiff.

9:00pm Dick Pearce Quartet

After Jimmy Deuchar, arguably the greatest of the post-war modern British trumpet players, the man most deserving of the title of heir to the throne is probably Dick Pearce. His influences include Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Don Cherry - which perhaps underpin Dick's often poignant, fragile but beautifully lyrical playing, and equally ferocious but coolly controlled hard bop. His long association with Ronnie Scott produced an all-too rare recording Never Pat A Burning Dog (1990) which features Dick as perfect foil to Ronnie's more straight ahead tenor work. Dick has influenced a whole generation of British trumpeters including Gerard Presencer and Guy Barker.
