The Gareth Roberts Quintet return to CaféJAZZ for the launch of their second album.'Go Stop Go'. Since the release of their first album four years ago the band has performed on a full UK Jazz Services tour and at several of the country's biggest festivals. This weekly session has been home to many of South Wales’s finest musicians and enthusiastic amateurs for over sixteen years. Jazz Attic offers the chance for all budding musicians to ‘sit in’ with the talented house trio. All instruments and singers are welcome. Anyone who arrives early enough is given the chance to play.

This exciting quartet plays a mix of afro jazz, funk and traditional African pieces. They aim to entertain with their grooves and fiery soloing. The group is led by Achille Mondo on bass, Henry Johnson on drums, Simon Kingman on guitar and Tim Short on percussion.

Vocalist Helen and the band have found a love and appreciation for the Great American Songbook. The group's deep affiliation with jazz guitar allw them to accompany Helen sensitively with a melodic sound. Expect swing, Bossa Nova, ballads and a couple of surpising extras.

9:00pm ROB HADDON QUARTET

A Cardiff Jazz Society presentation

Rob Haddon has been a prominent musician on the Welsh jazz scene for a couple of decades now, from appearing in acoustic duo’s with Dylan Fowler to playing in electric jazz-funk outfits such as Time Out and Chameleon, as well as leading his own trio or quartet. On this occasion, Rob teams up with pianist Ivan Sadka, drummer Steve Hawkins and bass player Mike Morgan who will also add vocals on a couple of numbers.

A Cardiff Jazz Society presentation

Following success with its jazz course in previous years, Cardiff Jazz Society is again providing an educational project that will enable young people of school/college age, to improve their musical ability with experienced professional musicians in public performance. Tutors Dick Hamer (reeds), Paula Gardiner (bass), Gareth Roberts (brass), Paul Jones (piano) and Mark O’Connor (drums) will guide the students through two days of practise before appearing in public at Café Jazz. The Cardiff Jazz Society wishes to thank the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for providing facilities for practise sessions.
